35 years of Oxford International: a global education journey

May 19, 2026

This year marks a significant milestone for Oxford International: 35 years of opening doors through education.

Founded in 1991 by David Brown and Robert Darell, the organisation began with a simple but powerful belief — that education can change lives. What started as outbound travel programmes for UK university students, alongside summer English language courses for international learners, has since grown into a global education platform supporting both international and domestic students across multiple stages of their educational journey.

From the outset, our founders demonstrated both ambition and resilience. Early backing from the King’s Trust, helped lay the foundations for sustainable growth. Today, Oxford International is proud to remain closely connected to the Trust, reflecting a long-standing commitment to opportunity and social impact.

Reflecting on the milestone, CEO Lil Bremermann-Richard said:

“Reaching 35 years is an important moment for us. It’s a chance to reflect on how far we’ve come — from a small, entrepreneurial venture to a global education organisation — but more importantly, to recognise the people behind that journey.

What makes Oxford International special is the collective effort of colleagues, partners and educators who have shaped our story over the years. Their commitment to students and to each other is what continues to drive us forward.

While we are proud of our history, we are equally focused on the future — continuing to innovate, expand access to education, and create meaningful opportunities for students around the world.”

A journey of growth and diversification

Over three and a half decades, Oxford International has continuously evolved to meet the changing needs of students and partners worldwide.

The 1990s saw the establishment of our first English language schools in Greenwich and Brighton, building a strong base in the UK. In the early 2000s, we expanded our summer school offering through Bucksmore Education, followed by the acquisition of Oxford Sixth Form College in 2010, strengthening our presence in one of the world’s leading academic cities.

Our international expansion began in 2013 with schools in Vancouver and Toronto, followed by further growth in North America and the UK. In 2014, Bowmark Capital joined Oxford International as a minority investor, supporting the organisation’s continued expansion. Strategic partnerships and acquisitions — including d’Overbroeck’s School and Homelingua — further broadened both our academic offering and our reach.

The following decade marked a significant step forward in higher education partnerships. Through partnerships with leading universities, Oxford International played an increasingly important role in supporting students’ progression into higher education.

In 2021, the organisation strengthened its position as a global education platform through a management buy-out backed by THI Investments, alongside the launch of the Oxford International Digital Institute — a move that expanded access to education through online and blended learning.

Building for the future

In recent years, Oxford International has continued to diversify its portfolio in response to global demand.

The development of Career Colleges in Canada and vocational programmes in the UK, as well as the career-focused programmes of our higher education institutions in Australia (Universal Higher Education Australia) and industry ties of our University of Southampton Delhi campus in India, reflect a growing focus on employability and skills-based education.

At the same time, our Education Services and Academic Partnerships divisions have expanded significantly, working with institutions across the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, Germany and India, in source markets and via online delivery.

Recent milestones include:

Each step reflects a consistent focus: delivering high-quality, accessible education (internationally and domestically) that prepares students for a rapidly changing world.

A collective achievement

While the organisation has evolved significantly since 1991, one thing has remained constant: our people and their collective, unwavering commitment to our core values: Integrity, Passion & Pride, Care, Creativity… and SMILE.

This milestone is not just about the growth of a business, but about the collective effort of colleagues, partners, and educators who have contributed over the years. From those who have been part of the journey for decades to those who joined more recently, every contribution has helped shape what Oxford International is today.

Together, we continue to deliver our vision of Learning without Limits.

Looking ahead

As we mark 35 years, this is not simply a moment to reflect, but an opportunity to look forward.

The global education landscape continues to evolve, and Oxford International remains committed to innovation — whether through digital learning, international and domestic partnerships, or new models of delivery that meet the needs of modern learners.

At its core, the organisation is still driven by the same entrepreneurial spirit and belief in education that defined its early days.

We believe we’re just getting started — and that the best is yet to come.
